Blog:How Professional Teeth Cleanings Help Prevent Cavities and Gum Disease

Do you know that even the best home teeth-cleaning routine has its limits? Understanding those limits is the first step toward a truly healthy mouth.
The sticky bacteria-filled film that forms daily on your teeth is called plaque. Brushing and flossing will clear most of it, but a little always remains. This little bit hides in the nooks and crannies, behind your back teeth, or just under the gums, in tiny grooves you can’t feel.
Over time, leftover plaque hardens and turns into tartar, also known as calculus. Tartar is very tough. Once it forms, no toothbrush can remove it. Only a dental professional with specialized tools can remove it.
And here is why that matters. Tartar is rough. Bacteria cling to it easily. As tartar builds up along your gumline, your gums get irritated. They turn red. They bleed when you brush. That is gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease.
If tartar stays put, things get worse. Your gums pull away and form pockets. Bacteria move into those pockets. The infection spreads deeper and begins to eat away at the bone that holds your teeth. This is periodontitis. At this point, your teeth can loosen and even fall out.
A professional teeth cleaning is not just a more thorough brushing. It is a different process entirely.
The first step is scaling. Your hygienist will use a small metal tool, sometimes with a gentle vibration, to break up tartar deposits. They work along your gumline and between your teeth, reaching places you simply cannot get to at home. You might hear scraping sounds. It should not hurt.
Once the tartar is gone, the second step is polishing. A soft rubber cup spins over each tooth with a gritty paste. This smooths the tooth surface. Smooth teeth are harder for plaque to stick to. It also removes surface stains, making your teeth look brighter.
Many cleanings also include a fluoride treatment. Fluoride strengthens your enamel. It helps reverse the very earliest stages of tooth decay before a cavity forms. Some patients also get dental sealants, which protect against food particles and plaque.
Plaque is what causes both cavities and gum disease. The bacteria in plaque munch on sugar and turn it into acid. That acid eats away at your enamel. Over time, it makes a hole. That’s a cavity.
Gum disease works differently. Your body senses the bacteria and tries to fight them off. It sends out chemicals that cause swelling. Over time, that swelling damages your gums and the bone that supports your teeth.
Cleanings help so much because they remove the plaque and tartar. This means that there is no more acid eating away at your enamel and no more inflammation attacking your gums. It’s a simple reset that benefits your entire mouth, not just your teeth.
During a cleaning, your dentist will also check for signs of oral cancer. He or she will also examine fillings for cracks and look for issues like teeth grinding that might otherwise go unnoticed. Finding these problems early makes treatment easier and less expensive.
